Back Pressure
|
The viscosity resistance of a material to continued flow when a mould is closing. In extrusion, the resistance to the forward flow of molten material.

Backing Plate
|
An injection moulding, a plate used as a support for the cavity blocks, guide pins, bushings, etc.
|
|
Baffle
|
A device used to restrict or divert the passage of fluid through a pipe line or channel. In hydraulic systems the device, which often consists of a disc with a small central perforation, restricts the flow of hydraulic fluid in a high pressure line. A common location for the disc is in a joint in the line. When applied to moulds, the term is indicative of a plug or similar device located in a stream or water channel in the mould and designed to divert and restrict the flow to a desired path.

Bag Moulding
|
A method of applying pressure during bonding or moulding, in which a flexible cover, usually in connection with a rigid die or mould, exerts pressure on the material being moulded, through the application of air pressure or drawing of a vacuum.

Bakelite
|
The proprietary name for phenolic and other plastics materials produced by Bakelite Limited, but often used indiscriminately to describe any phenolic moulding material or moulding. The name is derived from that of Dr Leo Hendrik Baekeland (1863-1944), a Belgian who, through his work on the synthesis of phenolic resins and their commercial development in the early 1900's, is generally considered to be the father of the plastics industry.

Ball Check Valve
|
A device mounted at the discharge end of an injection screw used to allow forward flow of plastic during recovery and no flow during the injection stroke. This valving is accomplished by positioning of an internal ball.

Banbury
|
An apparatus for compounding materials composed of a pair of contra-rotating rotors which masticate the materials to form a homogeneous blend. This is an internal type mixer which produces excellent mixing.

Barrel (Cylinder)
|
A cylindrical housing in which the screw rotates, including the integrally formed special inner surface material, or replaceable liner, if used. Also commonly referred to as a cylinder.

Barrel Capacity
|
The amount of material that a machine will hold with the screw fully retracted. The machine is prepared to deliver that amount of material when it is at its largest shot size setting. Barrel capacity can be described as either the weight or the volume of material that is in front of the screw when it is at its maximum shot size setting.

Barrel Shell (Backing Material)
|
The outer thick wall of the barrel made from metal backing material to provide strength and to hold the lining.

Barrier Flight
|
A secondary flight of reduced outside diameter and usually designed to separate melted polymer from solid polymer or to enhance melting by having the polymer pass over it.

Barrier Resins
|
A group of resins specially formulated to resist the transmission of oxygen, water, solvents, essential oils, etc.
|
|
Bayonet Adapter
|
A cylindrical shaped part with holding pins that threads into the thermocouple hole and retains a spring loaded thermocouple.

|
Bearing (HUB)
|
The portion of the screw immediately behind the flighted length which prevents the escape of material and provides a seal between the screw and the barrel.
|
|
Bell End
|
A flange at the discharge end of the barrel which provides added strength to withstand internal pressure.
|
|
Benzene Ring
|
The basic structure of benzene, the most important aromatic chemical. It is an unsaturated, resonant 6-carbon ring having three double bonds. One or more of the 6 hydrogen atoms of benzene may be replaced by other atoms or groups.

Beta Gage (or beta-ray guage)
|
A gage consists of two facing elements, a B-ray-emitting source and a B-ray detector. When a sheet material is passed between the elements, some of the B-rays are absorbed, the percent absorbed being a measure of the a real density or the thickness of the sheet.

Bimetallic
|
A term used to indicate that a barrel is composed of two (or more) metals, commonly used to refer to barrels which have a centrifugally cast lining.

Binder
|
In a reinforced plastic, the continuos phase which holds together the reinforcement.

Biocides and Fungicides
|
These additives act as pesticides and are used to inhibit the growth of fungus and other pests.
