Definition |
H Dimension
The height of the bottle finish measured from the sealing surface, in a line parallel to the axis of the finish and tangent to the threads on the finish, down to a point where the line intersects the body (shoulder) of the container. The inside height of the closure measured from the bottom of the closure, in a line tangent to the threads of the closure and terminating at the inside, top of closure.

H F Preheating
See 'Dielectric Heating'
Halocarbon Plastics
Plastics based on resins made by the polymerization of monomers composed only of carbon and a halogen or halogens.
Hardener
(1) A substance or mixture of substances added to plastic composition, or an adhesive to promote or control the curing reaction by taking part in it. The term is also used to designate a substance added to control the degree of hardness of the cured film. See also Catalyst. (2) Second chemical component required for activating the cross-linking reaction of prepolymers, in order to manufacture thermosets or elastomers
Hardness
The resistance of a plastics material to compression and indentation. Among the most important methods of testing this property are Brinell hardness, Rockwell hardness and Shore hardness.
Haze
The cloudy or turbid appearance of an otherwise transparent material caused by light scattered from within the specimen or from its surfaces.
HDPE
High density polyethylene
HDT
Heat deflection temperature
Head
The end section of a blow moulding machine (in a general extruder) in which the melt is transformed into a hollow parison.
Head Space
The space between the fill level of a container and the sealing plane
Heat Deflection Temperature
See 'Heat-Distortion Point'
Heat Stabilizers
These additives increase the ability of the material to withstand the negative effects of heat exposure. They are used to increase the overall service temperature of the material.
Heat-Distortion Point
The temperature at which a standard test bar (ASTM D648) deflects 0.010 in under a stated load of either 66 or 264 p.s.i.
Heater Bands
The electrical heating elements mounted on or around the barrel, adapters, dies, and nozzles! etc.
Heating Chamber
In injection moulding, that part of the machine in which the cold feed is reduced to a hot melt. Also Heating Cylinder.
Heating Zone
A portion of the barrel length having independent temperature control of the heater bands.
Heat-Sealing
A method of joining plastic films by simultaneous application of heat and pressure to areas in contact. Heat may be supplied conductively or dielectrically.
Heel
The part of a container between the bottom bearing surface and the side wall.
Heel Radius
The degree of curvature at the extreme bottom end of a container extending upward from the bearing surface. Also called Base Radius.
Helix Angle
The angle of a screw flight at its periphery relative to a plane perpendicular to the screw axis. It is calculated as: Helix Angle = Arctangent ( Lead) Pi x D)
