Term Definition
Oblong A particular shape. A container which has a rectangular cross section perpendicular to the major axis.
Odorants Odorants are used to add odor to materials, usually for safety reasons.
Off Centre Any condition where the finish opening is not centred over the bottom of the container. Also, the condition where the mandrel is not concentric with the ring of the blowing head.
Offset Printing A printing technique in which ink is transferred from a reservoir to a printing plate. For the ink printing plate, the image is printed on a cylindrical rubber roll (blanket) and then to the object to be printed.
Oil-soluble Resin Resin which at moderate temperatures will dissolve in, disperse in, or react with, drying oils to give a homogeneous film of modified characteristics.
Olefins A group of unsaturated hydrocarbons of the general formula (formula), and named after the corresponding paraffins by the addition of ene or ylene to the stem. Examples are ethylene and propylene.
Oleo Resins Semi-solid mixtures of the resin and essential oil of the plant from which they exude, and sometimes referred to as balsams. Oleo-resinous materials also consist of products of drying oils and natural or synthetic resins.
Oligomer A polymer consisting of only a few monomer units such as a dimer, trimer, tetramer, etc, or their mixtures.
One-shot Moulding In the urethane foam field, indicates a system whereby the isocyanate, polyol, catalyst, and other additives are mixed together directly and a foam is produced immediately (as distinguished from Prepolymer).
Opaque Descriptive of a material or substance which will not transmit light. Opposite of transparent, q.v. Materials which are neither opaque or transparent are sometimes described as semi-opaque, but are more properly classified as translucent, q.v.
Open-Cell Foamed Plastic A cellular plastic in which there is a predominance of interconnected cells.
OPET Oriented polyethylene terephthalate
OPP Oriented polypropylene
Optimum Conditions The machine settings you use that will allow the mould to be filled with the lowest pressure drop and produce parts with the least amount of residual stress.
Orange-Peel Said of injection mouldings that have unintentionally rough surfaces.
Organic Pigments Characterised by good brightness and brilliance. They are divided into toners and lakes. Toners, in turn, are divided into insoluble organic toners and lake toners. The insoluble organic toners are usually free from salt-forming groups. Lake toners, are practically pure, water-insoluble heavy metal salts of dyes without the fillers or substrates of ordinary lakes. Lakes, which are not as strong as lake toners, are water-insoluble heavy metal salts or other dye complexes precipitated upon or admixed with a base or filler.
Organosol A vinyl or nylon dispersion, the liquid phase of which contains one or more organic solvents. See also Plastisol.
Orientation The alignment of the crystalline structure in polymeric materials so as to produce a highly uniform structure. Can be accomplished by cold drawing or stretching during fabrication.
Orifice The opening in the extruder die formed by the orifice bushing (ring) and mandrel.
Orifice Bushing The outer part of the die in an extruder head.
