Term Definition
Radio Frequency (R.F) Preheating A method of preheating used for moulding materials to facilitate the moulding operation or reduce the moulding cycle. The frequencies most commonly used are between 10 and 100 Mc./sec.
Radio Frequency Welding A method of welding thermoplastics using a radio frequency field to apply the necessary heat. Also known as high frequency welding.
Raised Register A register that has a larger diameter than the adjacent root diameter. This is sometimes supplied on injection screws having metering depths too deep to match the rear seat of a standard non-return valve.
Ram See 'Force Plug'
Ram Travel The distance the injection ram moves in filling the mould, in either injection or transfer moulding.
Rapid Prototyping (RP) The production of a limited number of components originating directly from a CAD definition in a time-compressed manner
Rapid Tooling (RP) The direct use of CAD data in the production of a mould or fixtures for the manufacturing of a part. It also includes the production of a mould utilizing time reducing technologies.
Raw Material Naturally occurring starting material used to manufacture a product, such as petroleum, coal, ores, wood, hides, and cotton, as well as water and air; the intermediate product (semi-finished product) is formed from the raw material during the production process, and the finished (manufactured) products are produced from the intermediate product
Rayon The generic term for fibers, staple, and continuous filament yarns composed of regenerated cellulose, but also frequently used to describe fibers obtained
Reaction Injection A process that involves the high pressure impingement mixing of two or more reactive liquid components and injecting into a closed mold at low pressure.
Ream Usually 500 sheets, 24x36 of industrial paper. Sometimes expressed as 3000sp feet.
Rear Radius The radius at the intersection of the rear or trailing side of the flight and the screw root. Usually this radius is larger than the front radius and may change from one portion of the screw to another.
Rear Seat A flat, ring shaped portion of a non-return valve that abuts the front vertical face of an injection screw and seals the flow of plastic by contact with the rear conical shaped end of the check ring.
Recessed Panel A container design in which the flat area for labeling is indented or recessed. Also, see Label Panel.
Reciprocating Screw An extruder system in which the screw when rotating is pushed backwards by the molten polymer which collects in front of the screw. When sufficient material has been collected, the screw moves forward and forces the material through the head and die at a high speed.
Recovery Rate The weight (or volume) of a specified moldable material discharged from the screw per unit of time, when operating at 50% of injection capacity, as determined by SPI test procedure. The rating is normally expressed as ounces r cubic inches) per second.
Rectangular A particular shape of a container which has right angles with adjacent sides of unequal dimensions.
Recycled Plastic A plastic prepared from used articles which have been cleaned and reground.
Recycling Reutilization of raw or used materials; for example, plastic sprues from injection-molded parts are recycled by processing them to form a granulate, which is then returned to the injection molding process
Reformulated Plastic Recycled plastic that has been upgraded to alter or improve performance capability or to change characteristics through use of plasticizers, fillers, stabilizers, pigments, etc.
