S Dimension
Locates the position of the bottle thread with respect to the sealing surface. The "S" dimension is the vertical distance from the sealing surface to the intersection of the finish wall and the top part of the first part of bottle thread where full depth contour exists.
Sag
The extension locally (often near die face) of the parison during extrusion by gravitational forces. This causes necking-down of the parison. Also refers to the flow of a molten sheet in a thermoforming operation.
Sample
A small part or portion of a material or product intended to be representative of the whole.
SAN
Styrene acrylonitrile
Sandblasted
See 'Grit Blasted'
Sandwich
Flat multilayer composite design consisting of two high-strength outer layers and a light, thick inner layer; this design provides a high surface moment of inertia and great stiffness
Sandwich Constructions
Panels composed of a lightweight core material - honeycomb, foamed plastic, etc to which two relatively thin, dense, high strength faces or skins are adhered.
Sandwich Heating
A method of heating a thermoplastic sheet prior to forming which consists of heating both sides of the sheet simultaneously.
Saran Plastic
See 'Vinylidene'
Saturated Compounds
Organic compounds which do not contain double or triple bonds and thus cannot add on elements or compounds.
SB
Styrene-butadiene plastic
SBR
Styrene-butadiene rubber
Scar
A characteristic mark on plastic containers which is confined mostly to the bottom. It is caused by the pinch-off operation and is often referred to as the length of the pinch-off.
Scrap
Any product of a moulding operation that is not part of the primary product. In compression moulding, this includes flash, culls, runners, and is not reusable as a moulding compound. Injection moulding and extrusion scrap (runners, rejected parts, sprues, etc) can usually be reground and remoulded.
Screen Pack
A woven metal screen or equivalent device installed across the flow of melt between the tip of an extruder screw and the die and supported by the breaker plate. It is used to strain out contaminants or to increase the back pressure or both.
Screen Printing (ACL)
A printing technique involving the passage of printing medium, such as ink, through a web or fabric, which has been stretched on a frame, to which a refined form of stencil has been applied. The stencil openings determine the form and dimensions of the imprint thus produced.

Screw
A helically flighted shaft which rotates within the barrel to mechanically work and advance the material being processed. Telford Smith Engineering manufacture screws, barrels and extruders as well as recondition your existing screws, barrels and tiebars on extrusion, injection & blow moulding machines. Visit www.telfordsmith.com.au for more information.
Screw Axis
A reference line of infinite length drawn through the centre at the rear of the shank and the centre of the discharge end. Telford Smith Engineering manufacture screws, barrels and extruders as well as recondition your existing screws, barrels and tiebars on extrusion, injection & blow moulding machines. Visit www.telfordsmith.com.au for more information.

Screw Channel
See 'Channel'
Screw Diameter
The dimension defined by the cross-section of the screw bounded by its flight lands. Although it is usually expressed as a nominal diameter (such as 3 1/2") its actual diameter could be 3.490" to 3.492". Telford Smith Engineering manufacture screws, barrels and extruders as well as recondition your existing screws, barrels and tiebars on extrusion, injection & blow moulding machines.
