Term Definition
Vacuum Forming Method of sheet forming in which the plastic sheet is clamped in a stationary frame, heated, and drawn down by a vacuum into a mould. In a loose sense, it is sometimes used to refer to all sheet forming techniques, including Drape Forming involving the use of vacuum and stationary moulds.
Vacuum Metalizing Process in which surfaces are thinly coated with metal by exposing them to the vapor of metal that has been evaporated under vacuum (one millionth of normal atmospheric pressure).
VAE Vinyl acetate-ethylene
Valley Printing Ink is applied to the high points of an embossing roll and subsequently deposited in what becomes the valleys of the embossed plastic material.
VCE Vinyl chloride-ethylene resin
VCEV Vinyl chloride-ethylene-vinyl
VCM Vinyl chlorider monomer
VCMA Vinyl chloride-methyl acrylate
VCMMA Vinyl chloride-methylmethacrylate
VCOA Vinyl chloride-octyl acrylate resin
VCVAC Vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate resin
VCVDC Vinyl chloride-vinyfidene chlori
Vehicle The liquid medium in which pigments, etc, are dispersed in coatings such as paint, and which enable the coating to be applied.
Velocity Profile The fact that plastic material moves at different speeds relative to the flow cross section as it flows into the mould during the filling phase. The velocity of the material depends upon its location relative to the mould wall. Material at the centre of flow away from the mould walls flows the fastest.
Vent In a mould, a shallow channel or minute hole cut in the cavity to allow air to escape as the material enters.
Vent Bleed The unplanned escape of melt through the vent during the operation of vented barrel processing.
Vent Deflector A barrel with a vent which utilizes a two-stage screw to accomplish the removal of volatiles from the material being processed.
Vent Hole See 'Vent Port'
Vent Port An opening through the barrel wall, intermediate in the injection or extrusion process, to permit the removal of air, water vapour and volatile matter from the material being processed.
Vent Stack (Chute) A device surrounding a major portion of the vent deflector designed to prevent any material that might escape through the vent port during start up from collecting on the barrel, heater bands or wiring.
