Chalking
A powdery residue on the surface of a material often resulting from degradation.
Channel
With the screw in the barrel, the space between the flights bounded by the root of the screw and the bore of the barrel.
Channel Area (Axial)
The cross-sectional areas of the channel measured in a plane through and containing the screw axis.
Channel Depth
The distance in a radial direction from the bore of the barrel to the root of the screw.
Channel Volume
The volume developed by the "axial area of screw channel" in one revolution about the screw axis. The location of measurement should be specified..
Channel Volume (Enclosed)
The volume of screw channel starting form the forward edge of the feed opening to the discharge end of the screw channel. Also called screw inventory.
Channel Width
The distance across the screw channel in a direction perpendicular to the flight measured at the periphery of the flight.
Charge
The measurement or weight of material used to load a mould at one time or during one cycle.
Chase
An enclosure of any shape, used to: (a) shrink-fit parts of a mould cavity in place (b) prevent spreading or distortion in hobbing (c) enclose an assembly of two or more parts of a split cavity block.
Check Ring
The cylindrically shaped component of a non-return valve that reciprocates in an axial direction. During injection, the ring shuts off against the surface of the rear seat of the valve preventing the melt from flowing backward toward the feed section of the screw. During screw recover, the ring rests against the front seat (or stud in a three piece valve) of the valve allowing melt to flow forward through the valve to the discharge end of the barrel.
Chemically Foamed Polymeric Material
A cellular material in which the cells are formed by gases generated from thermal decomposition or other chemical reaction.
Chill Roll
A cored roll, usually temperature controlled with circulating water, which cools the web before winding. For chill roll (cast) film, the surface of the roll is highly polished. In extrusion coating, either a polished or a matte surface may be used depending on the surface desired on the finished coating.
Chill Roll Extrusion (or cast film extrusion)
The extruded film is cooled while being drawn around two or more highly polished chill rolls cored for water cooling for exact temperature control.
Chlorfluorocarbon Plastics
Plastics based on polymers made with monomers composed of chlorine, fluorine and carbon only.
Chlorinated Polyether
The polymer is obtained from pentaerythritol by preparing a chlorinated oxetane and polymerising it to a polyether by means of opening the ring structure.
Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride Plastics
Plastics based on chlorinated polyvinyl chloride in which the chlorinated polyvinyl chloride is in the greatest amount by weight.
Choked Neck
Narrowed or constricted opening in the neck of a container
Chromium Plating
An electrolytic process that deposits a hard film of chromium metal onto working surfaces of other metals where resistance to corrosion, abrasion, and/or erosion is needed.
CIL (flow test)
A method of determining the rheology of flow properties of thermoplastic resins developed by Canadian Industries Ltd. In this test, the amount of the molten resin which is forced through a specific size orifice per unit time when a specified, variable force is applied gives a relative indication of the flow properties of various resins.
